A New Addiction In Town

People of all ages and from allover the world are becoming addicted to technology. People are willing to isolate themselves from the community and would rather use technology to communicate with others. For example , students who become addicted to technology have a hard time focusing on things they have to do in class. Usually, their grades go down and they often have a hard time bringing them back up. They get desperate to check their phones as often as every five minutes. Just like Kira Beilis said in her article How Your Technology Is Manipulating You , “We’re creating stuff that is so powerful as to almost be supernatural.” People should have a limited amount of time each day for using technology, because they are not experiencing the world around them. Although technology makes is easy for someone to connect with others, it also takes away that face-to-face communication that is very important nowadays.

People who use technology aren’t having the same experiences as people to don’t use technology as much. By communicating face-to-face you learn how to act in certain situations. Also, you see how other people act in certain situations, which you learn from also. Many employers look for people who know how to communicate with customers not someone who just knows how to communicate with someone using technology. All

Moreno 2

the situations you live when communicating with people face-to-face make you

knowledge on customer service larger and also helps you with live and any situations you

may that may later happen to you. The world is not going to adapt to you’re needs. You have to adapt to the world. Just because you only know how to communicate with people using technology doesn’t mean you’re going to get hired in a job that requires using technology. Of course, people will learn many things while using technology. How to use it, find shortcuts, and use the ability of the technology to the max. There are many jobs that require people to know a lot of technology and software, but what would it matter if you don’t know how to communicate with people. Just like the AARP Foundation stated in their article, What Skills Do Employers Look For? “You need communication skills to sell yourself during the interview.” You won’t be able to inform the client of all the features and techniques you can do with certain technology, without communication skills.

There are so many ways to use technology that it pretty much distracts a person from doing their work. People are even using technology at work instead of working. Rob Walker had an experience with people addicted to technology he stated in his article “Colleges Addicted to Tech”, “I have worked at a small architecture firm for about eight years. Almost a year ago we hired a number of new people, and several of them surf the Internet up to half of the workday — shopping, watching YouTube videos, you name it. When not on the computer, they resemble swans, heads bent over their personal devices, texting or whatever.” I just shows how people get bored using one thing on their phone like YouTube and immediately find something else to do on it. He also said, “We’re in an

Moreno 3

“open” studio space, and those of us who actually work can’t help but notice. We also

pick up the slack and fix the mistakes that these people make because they are constantly distracted.” Technology isn’t only distracting people addicted at work but also those who are surrounding them. You can hear them laugh at something they saw or even get mad at something they didn’t like. It has a negative effect on everyone not just the person using it.

Technology also has a major affect on couples when one or the other is addicted to technology. Matt Richtel told a story about a couple in “ Attached To Technology And Paying A Price”, how a guy names Kord Campbell missed an very important email of a person who wanted to buy his Internet start-up. He found the email and replied but he was not able to sell it for the price he wanted, because he delayed the response. He was still able to make 1.3 million dollars off it. The cause the made him miss that email and not getting the price he want was all the technology he was using at that point. He had not one but three monitors on his desk. He pretty much spends all his day there. His wife Brenda said, “It seems like he can no longer be fully in the moment.” She’s seriously taken a tired with all the technology her husband is using. Which I find very interesting because if you go to the website (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/07/technology/07brain.html?_r=0) you can clearly see how both not just Kord is using an I-Pad during breakfast. There’s also another link after the fourth paragraph in parenthesis a link that takes you to the work space Kord has. Three monitor and all of them have different tabs that have a whole bunch of information. To me personally I would be in such stress having to keep up with all the information

Moreno 4

coming in. People like Kord have to have all this to keep everything they want within a click, but having a setup like this doesn’t mean you won’t miss an email that could pay you 1.3 million dollars.

The younger you start to use technology the greater the percentage you will be addicted to technology. Also, greater the risk of the child to get exposed to information or images they are not suppose to see. Nick interviewed Steve Jobs and wrote an article The New York Times Which is called “ Steve Jobs Was A Low-Tech Parent”. Here after a series of questions about his kids using I-pads. A very interesting topic came up on children being exposed to many stuff. Steve said, “ exposure to harmful content like pornography, bullying from other kids, and perhaps worse of all, becoming addicted to their devices, just like their parents.” Being exposed to material of this kind can traumatize the children. Nowadays many parents give their children their phone or tablet so that they would stop crying or bothering them. This is such a big mistake, because the older the child gets they will want more and more, and also won’t be quiet until they get what they want. Children who get addicted at an early age to technology have a more difficult time to get rid of this addiction.

Technology is very helpful with connecting and keeping up with people and information, but it is also very addicting. Once you use it is very easy to get addicted. This addiction can bring you many problems such not getting a job for lack of communication skills, not knowing how to react to certain situations and also issues in your own family. Technology can give you so many information but also take away all the knowledge you have earn during the years.

Counter Argument to "Online Gambling Is Anything But Pretty"

This article is about how gambling is becoming easier for people to come addicted to. Since its become and online thing you can gamble from your house. People have the right to decide what they want to do, that is why there is an age limit in order to gamble. Since there is online gambling now, people could safe gasoline they were going to waste if they actually went to a casino, also what if the casino was far. This is very convenient for people who have trouble with transportation to those casinos. Some casinos offer transportation for their clients who need it. both of these options are very good or the clients. Also with online gambling you can stop what you're doing and do something else without loosing your space or money. Another thing, is you can multitask when online gambling. You can have a split screen, so you cans see both things.  If you like to hear to a specific kind of music if you gamble from you house , car or anywhere but online you can hear to what you want to listen. While if you're at a casino you have to hear what they put on. Online gambling makes it easier and very affordable for clients to gamble during anytime of the day and anywhere.

Response to "Online Gambling Is Anything But Pretty"

This article states that gambling is becoming more accessible for people with the new online gambling. This is a major problem especially for those with gambling problems. I also find very interesting how people who live within 10 miles from a casino has a bigger chance of becoming addicted to gambling. They are also expecting this problem to rise among Americans even more than it already is. The weaknesses of this article is that I would of like if they added an example of some and their story, how they dealt or are dealing with this problem. I would have also like for the author to add where is this problem more likely to happen, in what cities. I feel like the title could've been more catchy. It's very boring. People will always look at the title, and if they are curious they'll read it but this title is very like blah. I really like how this article is organize everything follows the flow of the information and also explains everything. The author first presented the problem then at the end the solution or recommendation. The vocabulary used in this article is very adequate for it. It also includes statics that provide more information for the reader. Overall this article is very informative and really interesting.

Response to Citizen Four Documentary

This response is going to be about a documentary we watch in class called "Citizen Four" directed by Laura Poitras . It's about how the NSA (National Security Agency) is taking information from people who live in the USA. This information is everything they do online. Edward Snowden, who worked for  the NSA, felt like the government was invading people's privacy by tracking everything they do. He tells the reporters that the NSA is growing. One of the phone companies that he says that NSA is asking information is Verizon. He says that Verizon is betraying their customers. Why wouldn't we believe him? He woks for them and he put himself at risk for spilling all this information. He is a very smart person from what I observed. When using a computer with a camera he covered his face with a red blanket. By doing so, the NSA can't identify him if they were tracking him. He also told the reporters to never leave the same SIM card in the computer, because it can make it easier for the NSA to get a hold of information. He gave them information that even I was surprised when he said that they had drones flying around and they could just put a code and look at every drone there is out there. Personally, I applaud Edward for doing what he did. He opened the eyes of many people who had no idea of what the NSA was doing. Also people who lied about them not getting information from phone providers. Edward Snowden is someone to remember and wherever he is I hope he is happy and proud of what he did.

Response to "The Snitch In Your Pocket"

This response is about going to be on the article “The Snitch in Your Pocket” written by Michael IsIkoff. It gives us information about how the government are requisitioning the location of billions of people live, which is their exact location at that exact time. It shows how this action can help deal with criminals but also how it’s bad and can cause conflicts. Some of the biggest phone companies are betraying their customers and giving information to the government. Some of those phone companies are AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint.

Some of the article is that it shows both the positive and the negative of these actions. The FBI has capture many criminals by using this methods. Yes, I agree that it’s a good idea to use this to fight crime. It will help decrease all the crime in certain areas. The article says that The Justice department doesn’t keep statistics on requests for cell-phone data, according to Isikoff article. I really liked the title of the article because it keeps you curious as of what it will be about. By making us curious it will make more people read the article just because, the title was interesting. I really liked the first 6 paragraphs because they gave information in an order that all made sense and it was easier to comprehend the argument.

These article also has negative parts which I find that I got lost when it started to say what happened with lawyer Gidari’s client. I would’ve loved an example of what happened to a client and was wrongly followed or tracked. I feel like they could’ve organized the last few paragraphs more perhaps made the article longer and given more details, statistics and eye witness experiences.

Overall this article is informative for the audience. It gives information that I  was not even aware of before reading this article.

LA TImes Technology Addiction Article Response

The article I chose to read was "The business and culture of our digital lives", from the L.A. Times written by Shan Li. It first says that if we haven't been at a dinner and had an urgency to check our phone. Personally, I find this true, because every time I go out I have it in the back of my head. Usually, I think I wonder what's going on with the celebrities that I follow on social media, family member, friends or sales that are promoted on social media. I feel like if we saw something interesting when we first checked we are going to want to look at that thing and further research it. People have everything connected to their phones like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Vine, Snapchat, Emails, and Youtube are just some of the things that people have. Every time something new that the person is interested in it would notify them. By them getting all these notification it will be harder for them to not check their phones. A British student said "Media is my drug; without it I was lost." "I am an addict. How could I survive 24 hours without it?" If they would just go out and have fun. They can forget about their phones while doing activities such as bowling, golf or soccer are just some. If they are motivated and have the focus on what they are doing and not focusing on their phones. My personal experience is whenever I have Wi-Fi I am more tempted to check my I-pad mini. Whenever I go out with my family, I don't really have the urgency to check anything. I usually enjoy what I'm doing. I find it incredible that people  would actually give up brushing there teeth for their phones. Its amazing what the world is coming to.http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technology/2011/08/technology-addiction-chocolate-caffeine.html

24 Hours W/No Music

So I had to go 24 hours without some type of technology, so I chose no music, seems difficult. Well it is, especially when you love to hear music all day. When I left class and got into the car I turned on the radio and forgot that I had to give up music. So I turned it off and the 24 hours started all over again. It didn't matter it was just for 2 min. I got home and got on YouTube to watch videos from the channels that I'm subscribed to. I was tempted to listen to music while eating breakfast, but I didn't. The hours passed and I had to go back to school for my human services class which is from 3 to 6. I was about to connect my I-pad mini to the stereo to listen to my playlist but I had forgotten my USB cable in the house. Then I remembered I had left it on purpose so I wont connect it to the stereo. I took the stereo out and drove in silence back to school. When I got to class 30 min early, because usually all the seats are taken I always listen to music while class starts. So I just sat there looking at Instagram. When class was over I drove back home in silence, looking at everything I passed. Things that I didn't see when listening to music. I paid more attention to music and driving, now I paid attention to driving and when making a stop at what was going on around me. The next day in the morning I drove to school and back home again in silence. Then finally when I had to go back to my Learn 11 class at 12:45 the 24 hours was over. I could finally listen to music and I did.
